We know most ceramics can withstand the microwave and dishwasher, but what about an open flame? Stovetop? Oven? This class will introduce you to a type of stoneware, known as flameware. We will discuss the differences between flameware and other stonewares, and develop a deeper understanding of why flameware is so unique.
Though there will be demos that supplement an existing understanding of ceramic processes. Rather than focusing on techniques specific to wheel throwing and handbuilding, we will discuss more about forms and tips for working with flameware.
Most classes begin with a demonstration of the technique to be learned that day, followed by class work time and individual guidance by the instructor as time allows. Instruction will additionally cover essential studio practices, including reclaiming clay, maintaining a clean workspace, and following safety guidelines. The final class will be dedicated to a fun gathering and potluck where students will discuss their works with each other and the instructor and exchange ideas on their work and what they learned.
This is an Intermediate-Level class. Prior clay experience is highly recommended.
