The molcajete, reimagined, becomes a symbol of transformation: a container for stories that cross cultures, generations, and geographies. In this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop, artist Gabe Medina Mendez invites participants to explore the intersections of tradition, memory, and place through the tactile practice of clay.

Using red clay, each person will create a pinch pot inspired by the form of the molcajete—a traditional Mexican mortar and pestle used in domestic kitchens for generations. This process is more than technique; it’s a space to reflect on the objects that ground us, feed us, and connect us across time and borders. As participants form and shape their vessels, they’ll be guided through a conversation about cultural terraforming, and the evolving role of functional objects in everyday ritual.

In addition to their own molcajete-inspired piece, each participant will also craft a small, freeform clay object that will become part of a larger, community-centered installation. This collaborative artwork will honor the collective creativity and shared stories of all who take part. Rooted in Gabe’s artistic practice—which blends traditional ceramic forms with contemporary motifs drawn from South Central Los Angeles—this workshop encourages a playful and personal engagement with clay.

This is an All-Levels workshop. No prior experience with clay is necessary.

We believe clay is for everyone. Please email us at info@potterynorthwest to inquire about tuition assistance.
