Joey Nuñez

Joey Nuñez was born in Manhattan, New York and raised in Celebration, Florida. Now based in Seattle, Washington, he works as the Studio Director at Pottery Northwest. Joey graduated with a BFA in ceramics from The University of Florida and has been working in clay for approximately six years.

As a child, he was drawn to the tactility and imaginative properties of clay. Endlessly passionate in making, his goal is for everyone to experience the joy and nostalgia in his handmade work. Joey draws influence from dramatic and colorful characters from various illustrative media found in cartoons and anime. Combining friends, family and bright animated colors into functional ware is the challenge he's expanding on as of late.

Artist Statement

As a child, I sculpted imaginary figures as a form of play. Now, I draw influence from the people who are close to me; my family and friends. The people we are given or choose to love are full of inspirational stories whether the feelings we create are beautiful or tragic or somewhere in between.

I illustrate on my forms drawing inspiration from my emotions, community and surroundings. My observations manifest as figures or functional wares, becoming pieces that grow in tandem with my social and emotional intelligence.
