Jamie Kirkpatrick is a studio potter and educator based in Golden, Colorado. Jamie has an unusual combination of backgrounds, holding graduate degrees in both geology and ceramics, and those two areas of study continue to intersect throughout his work. Historical ceramic traditions provide an important foundation for Jamie’s practice, but he is equally interested in contemporary approaches to form, surface, and firing. His knowledge of geology gives him another way of understanding the materials he works with—the minerals in clay and glaze, the effects of heat, and the transformations that happen inside the kiln.

Jamie works with several different firing methods, including wood firing, pit firing, and electric firing. He is especially drawn to processes that allow the kiln itself to leave a visible record on the piece. In wood and pit firing, shifting heat, flame, ash, and atmosphere create what Jamie describes as a kind of “painterly” surface—a record of everything that happened during the firing, captured directly on the vessel. That element of unpredictability is an important part of the work. Rather than controlling every detail, Jamie creates the conditions for the material and the firing process to participate in the final result. As an educator, he is equally committed to passing this knowledge forward, believing that the continued strength of ceramic traditions depends on artists sharing what they have learned with the next generation of makers.
